Questions
Until when can I book?
Seats for today: until 07:45 Karakol time, the car leaves at 08:00. Future dates: any time. A private car can be booked at any time, including for today.
Is the road safe? What car is it?
A UAZ 4×4, driven by its owner, a licensed local carrier. The road is 16 km of rough riverbed track with fords: bumpy and slow, 2–2.5 hours each way. The driver decides if it is safe to go. Conditions now: road today.
Do you pick up from hotels?
No. Everyone meets at Giraffe Coffee in central Karakol, a 5–10 minute walk from most hostels. Come by 07:50. If you are late, we wait 15 minutes.
What if I’m the only one booked?
The trip runs from 2 paid seats. With fewer, we offer you another date or a full refund.
Can I stay overnight and come back another day?
Yes. Book one way up, then one way down on the day you choose. The valley has guesthouses and yurts; you pay them directly.
Is there food, a toilet, phone signal, an ATM?
Guesthouses serve simple meals and have basic toilets. Bring snacks. There is no signal and no ATM, so bring cash in som.
What should I bring? Is the altitude a problem?
Swimsuit, towel, a warm layer, water and cash in som. The valley is at about 2,500 m. Most people feel fine; if you feel unwell, take it easy.
Can I bring kids or a big backpack?
Kids are welcome. Under 12 they travel with an adult, at the same seat price. One backpack per person; big trekking packs are fine on one-way trips.
Do you run in winter or bad weather?
Usually yes. Deep snow can close the road for a few days. If we can’t go, we tell you the evening before and you choose another date or a full refund. More: Altyn Arashan in winter.
How do I pay? Can I cancel?
By card online when you book, or by card or cash at the meeting point. Cancel free up to 24 hours before: cancellation and refunds.
