Three ways to get up the valley
Day trip
We leave Giraffe Coffee in central Karakol at 08:00, two and a half hours up the valley, four hours at the hot springs, back by 17:00. Hot spring entry included.
BookTrekker shuttle
You are walking the Ala-Kul loop and only need the ride. One way, or up and back with an open return date.
BookPrivate jeep
The whole UAZ to yourself. Your schedule, your stops, the driver waits for you.
BookWhy book here instead of arranging it in Karakol
- The departure is guaranteed at two people. The shared shuttles in town cancel if they do not fill five seats. We do not.
- The price is the price. No haggling at the taxi rank, no “the road is bad today, it is 3000 more”.
- You pay by card, before you land. Most drivers in Karakol take cash only, and the nearest reliable ATM is in the town centre.
- One meeting point, in the middle of town. Giraffe Coffee on Zhusaeva — a café you can walk to from any hostel in Karakol, not a park gate on the edge of it.
- Hot spring entry is included in the day trip. Nobody else includes it.
- We answer. One WhatsApp thread with a person in Karakol, not a booking platform inbox.
What the road is actually like
Sixteen kilometres of riverbed, boulders and two fords, climbing about 700 metres to a valley floor at 2 600 m. It takes two to two and a half hours in a UAZ, and the UAZ is the point: this is not a road a rental car can do, and most rental agreements in Kyrgyzstan explicitly forbid it. After heavy rain the fords rise and the last section can close entirely. We post the current state of the road, with the date we last drove it, on Road today.
Common questions
How much does a jeep to Altyn Arashan cost?
A seat on a shared day trip is $85 and includes four hours in the valley, the return to Karakol and hot spring entry. A one-way trekker shuttle seat is $45. The whole vehicle privately is $290 for a UAZ-469 (up to 4 people) or $360 for a UAZ-452 van (up to 8).
Does the driver wait for me?
On the day trip and on any private booking, yes — the driver stays in the valley for the whole four hours and drives you back. On the $45 shuttle he does not: that is a drop-off, and it is why it costs about half.
Can I go on my own?
Yes. Book a seat on a published departure and you travel with whoever else is on it. If you want a specific date with nobody else on it, that is a guaranteed solo departure at $190.
Is the road open in winter?
Usually yes, for a UAZ or a GAZ-66 — that is exactly what these vehicles are for. Deep snow can close it for a few days at a time. December to March we add a winter surcharge and we tell you honestly the day before if we think it is not going to happen.
