Getting Back Down from Altyn Arashan

Getting up to Altyn Arashan is easy to plan from Karakol. Getting down is where people get stuck: there is no signal in the valley, no taxi rank, and the jeeps that come up in the morning are often full of people going back the same afternoon.

The fix is simple. Book your seat down before you go up.

Who it is for

Ala-Kul trekkers finishing in Altyn Arashan. The classic loop goes up the Karakol gorge, over the pass and down into this valley. The last 16–17 km from the valley to Ak-Suu is a dirt road. After three days with a pack, most people would rather ride it. Descending from the lake to the valley takes about 4–5 hours, so if you leave the lake in the morning, 16:00 works with time for a soak. See Ala-Kul.

People who stayed a night or two. Ride up on a one-way seat, stay, ride down on another one-way seat on the day you choose. See staying overnight.

People who walked up. Walk up from Ak-Suu, ride down.

How to book it without signal

1. Before you lose signal, book a one-way seat from Altyn Arashan for your planned date.
2. If you aren't sure, choose the later date. It is easier to change while you are still in Karakol or on the gorge side.
3. On the day, be where the jeeps park in the meadow a little before 16:00. Your guesthouse can show you where.
4. If you can't make it, the guesthouse often knows a driver going down. Pass a message; when you reach signal, write to us.

Other ways down

Private UAZ. For groups of 4–8, or if you need a different time. See private.

Asking in the valley. Sometimes there is a spare seat in a car going down. Ask at the guesthouses early in the day, agree the price in cash before you get in. It is a gamble in peak season and rarely works off-season.

Walking. About 16.7 km and around 680 m down on the jeep track to Ak-Suu (Teploklyuchenka). Around four hours. From Ak-Suu, minibuses and taxis go to Karakol, about 10 km. Start by early afternoon so you finish in daylight.

If you came down to the Karakol gorge instead

If your trek ends on the Karakol gorge side, the shared jeep doesn't go there. Message us on WhatsApp with the date, rough time and number of people; we find a car and confirm the price. See Ala-Kul.
