How to Get to Altyn Arashan from Karakol
Altyn Arashan is at the top of about 17 km of rough track above Ak-Suu, 10 km east of Karakol. Only a high-clearance 4x4 or your own legs get you up. Here is every option, side by side.
Altyn Arashan is a meadow with hot springs at about 2,500 m. To get there you first go from Karakol to Ak-Suu (also called Teploklyuchenka), about 10 km east of town. From there a 16–17 km dirt track climbs about 680 m along the Arashan River to the valley. It is rough, steep in places and has river crossings. Normal cars don't make it.

1. A seat in our shared 4x4
The simplest way. You book a seat, not a car, so you don't need to find other people.
- Meet at 07:50, leave at 08:00 from Giraffe Coffee, Zhusaeva St, central Karakol.
- In the valley around 10:30. About five hours there.
- Back from the valley at 16:00, in Karakol around 18:00.
- 3,750 som return, or 2,750 som one way for overnight stays and treks.

2. A private UAZ
The whole car with a driver, at the time you choose. A UAZ-469 for up to 4 people costs 25,000 som; a UAZ-452 "bukhanka" for up to 8 costs 31,000 som. Bookable any time, including for today. For a group of four or more who want their own schedule, it is the easy option. See private.
3. Taxi or minibus to Ak-Suu, then walk
The budget way. Get to Ak-Suu by taxi or by minibus (recent guides name route 350 from Karakol; check the sign in the windscreen). From the start of the track it is about 5–6 hours on foot uphill, around 680 m of climbing, on the same dirt road the jeeps use.
- Start early. You want to arrive with light and energy to spare.
- Carry water and food. There is nothing on the way.
- Many people walk one way only: ride up on a one-way seat and walk down, or walk up and ride down.

4. Hike in and stay

5. Over the pass from the Karakol gorge
The Ala-Kul trek ends in Altyn Arashan for most people: up the Karakol gorge, past Ala-Kul lake (about 3,532 m), over the pass (about 3,860 m) and down into the valley. Two to four days. Logistics on Ala-Kul.
Driving yourself
Only in a real high-clearance 4x4 with experience on rough tracks. Most rental contracts don't allow this road. River crossings are the main risk after rain or snowmelt. There is no signal if something breaks. Check road today first. Taxis, parking and rentals: Altyn Arashan by car or taxi.
Coming from Bishkek or Almaty
Altyn Arashan is reached from Karakol, so first you get to Karakol.
- From Bishkek: marshrutka, shared taxi or the overnight bus, 6–7 hours. The night bus arrives in time for the 08:00 departure. See from Bishkek.

Getting back
If you went up one way, the way down is a one-way seat at 16:00 (2,750 som), a private car, or a walk.

How far is Altyn Arashan from Karakol?
About 10 km from Karakol to the village of Ak-Suu (Teploklyuchenka), then about 16.7 km of unpaved track up to the valley. Around two and a half hours by UAZ in total.
Can I go to Altyn Arashan for a day?
Yes. The shared 4x4 leaves Karakol at 08:00, gives you about five hours in the valley, heads back at 16:00 and is in Karakol around 18:00. A return seat costs 3,750 som.
Can I drive there in a normal car or a taxi?
No. Taxis and ordinary cars stop at Ak-Suu. The track needs a high-clearance 4x4 such as a UAZ and a driver who knows it.
How long is the walk up?
From the start of the track above Ak-Suu, about 5–6 hours uphill, with roughly 680 m of climbing. Walking down takes around four hours.
Do I need a guide?
Not for the valley. The road is easy to follow and the springs are next to the guesthouses. A guide makes sense for Ala-Kul outside July–September.
