When private is worth it and when it is not
Straight answer, because you can do this arithmetic yourself. Two of you: seats cost $170, the private Kozel is $290 — you are paying $120 for privacy, a schedule of your own and a pickup at your door. Four of you: seats cost $340, private is $290 — private is simply cheaper, book it. Six: seats $510, the van $360. Eight: seats $680, the van $360. From four people up there is no argument, and we would rather tell you that than sell you eight seats.
What private actually changes
- We come to your hotel. Shared departures all leave from Giraffe Coffee at 08:00; a private vehicle collects you at your door, at the hour you name. Most people still take 08:00 because the light is better and the fords are lower, but 06:00 for photographers and 11:00 for late risers both happen.
- You stop where you want. The Ak-Suu sanatorium, the first ford, the viewpoint above the treeline — all of it is a request rather than a negotiation.
- You can go up one day and come down the next for $450, with the same driver. It is not double the day rate even though the driver climbs that road twice — it is the cheapest honest way to do a night in the valley.
- The driver is yours for the day. He waits, and waiting is not a favour you are asking for.

Questions
Can we add stops on the way, like the Jeti-Oguz rocks?
Not on the same day — Jeti-Oguz is in the opposite direction and it is a full day of its own. Ak-Suu, the sanatorium and the lower valley are all on the way and cost nothing extra.
Is there a seatbelt / child seat?
These are Soviet vehicles. There are lap belts in the Kozel and there is no child seat. If you need one, bring it and the driver will fit it.
How much luggage fits?
In the Buhanka, eight people with full trekking packs, comfortably. In the Kozel, four people with day packs, or two with full packs. Five people is a Buhanka, not a Kozel — we would rather send the bigger vehicle than have you sit on each other for two hours.
Can we go somewhere else afterwards?
Yes, but tell us before you book. A private day is priced on this road and this road only; adding a second valley changes the day rate.
