Altyn Arashan Day Trip from Karakol

Altyn Arashan is a high valley above Karakol with hot springs, a fast river and a view of Palatka peak. Getting there is the hard part. The track is too rough for a normal car, and hiring a whole jeep is expensive for one or two people.

Meet at Giraffe Coffee on Zhusaeva Street, central Karakol, at 07:50. The car leaves at 08:00. The drive up takes 2 to 2.5 hours. Most of it is a riverbed track with fords, so expect to be shaken. You arrive around 10:30.

That gives you about five hours. Enough for a long soak, a walk up the valley and lunch at a guesthouse. The car leaves the valley at 16:00 sharp and reaches Karakol around 18:00, in time for dinner.

What to do with five hours

• Hot springs. Wooden bathhouses sit over the thermal water, about 250 som. There are also free wild pools by the river. Read the hot springs guide before you go.
• Walk. The meadow trail upstream gives the best views of Palatka. An easy hour out and back, or longer if you like. Ideas on the valley walks page.
• Lunch. Guesthouses serve simple hot meals. Bring cash.

• A warm layer. The valley is at about 2,500 m and it gets cold when clouds come in.

• If you get carsick, ask for a front seat when you arrive at 07:50

Who it suits

Solo travellers and couples who want the springs without paying for a whole car. Families with kids: children under 12 travel with an adult at the same seat price. Anyone with one free day in Karakol.
