Almaty to Altyn Arashan without a car

Take the direct bus to Karakol via the Kegen–Karkara crossing, sleep in town, and ride a shared 4x4 to the hot springs the next morning.

Getting from Almaty to Altyn Arashan takes two legs. First a bus to Karakol through the Kegen–Karkara border crossing. Then a seat in a 4x4 from central Karakol up to the valley. You need no car and no tour.

Leg 1: Almaty → Karakol

Direct bus. The first direct Karakol–Almaty bus via the Kegen checkpoint left on 7 September 2025. At launch a ticket cost 1,200 som for a route of about 370 km. The route was announced as year-round. Before this, buses went the long way through Bishkek and the Korday crossing.

We could not confirm the current departure time or the Almaty bus station from an official source, so we do not print one here. Ask at the station a day or two before you go.

Travel time. Driving times reported by a traveller who crossed by car: Karakol to the border about 2 hours, border to Kegen about 40 minutes, Kegen to Almaty about 4 hours, plus the border itself. A bus is slower than a car. Plan for a full day on the road.

The border. Kegen–Karkara used to be a daytime, summer-only post. On 26 August 2025, 24.kz reported it had switched to round-the-clock operation and opened to citizens of any country. Kazakhstan's parliament ratified the matching treaty change in January 2026. It is a high mountain post, so check its status before a winter trip.

Documents. Adult citizens of Kazakhstan can enter Kyrgyzstan with a national ID card for up to 90 days in any 180. Children under 16 need a passport. Other nationalities should check visa rules. Travellers report that Kegen does not accept e-visas.
