Ala-Kul loop: start or finish in Altyn Arashan?

The Ala-Kul loop begins or ends in Altyn Arashan, 12–15 km up a rough track. A one-way 4x4 seat takes that stretch off your legs.

Updated

Ala-Kul is the best-known trek around Karakol. Its turquoise lake sits at 3,532 m. The route crosses a pass at about 3,860 m. Most hikers do it as a loop of 40–50 km over three or four days.

Seat prices and booking for trekkers are on the Ala-Kul trek transfer page; the seat itself is our one-way 4x4 shuttle.

The loop has two ends. One is Karakol Gorge. The other is Altyn Arashan, a valley with hot springs. Between Altyn Arashan and the nearest bus stop at Ak-Suu lie 12–15 km of rough track. That is the stretch a transfer solves.

The classic loop and where transport fits

The usual direction, with stage times from central-asia.live:

DayStageTime
1Karakol Gorge to Sirota camp6–7 h
2Sirota to Ala-Kul lake over the pass5–6 h
3Ala-Kul to Altyn Arashan, descent4–5 h
4Altyn Arashan to Ak-Suu3–4 h on foot

Day 4 is a walk down a vehicle track after three hard days. You can replace it with a ride. Day 1 starts at Karakol Gorge, which you reach by taxi.

Option A: finish in Altyn Arashan, ride down

This is the most common use of the transfer.

The descent from the lake takes 4–5 hours. Leave the lake in the morning and you arrive with time for a soak before the ride.

The seat is in the same 4x4 that brings day visitors up in the morning. Licensed carriers do the driving; Arashan Transfer is the booking agent.

Option B: ride up, start from Altyn Arashan

Some hikers prefer the loop in reverse. You ride up to Altyn Arashan, walk to the lake, cross the pass and descend through Karakol Gorge.

Why people choose this:

The morning car leaves at 08:00 from Giraffe Coffee, Zhusaeva St, central Karakol. Meeting time is 07:50. You reach the valley around 10:30. The one-way seat is 2,750 som.

The trade-off: from Altyn Arashan the climb to the pass is long and steep. Pace yourself and acclimatise.

Option C: pick-up from Karakol Gorge

If your trek ends in Karakol Gorge, there is no shared car. We can arrange a pick-up on request. Message us on WhatsApp with your date, rough exit time and group size, and we will quote. We do not publish a fixed price because it depends on the day and the group.

For reference, central-asia.live lists a taxi from Karakol to the gorge trailhead at 1,500–2,000 som one way. In June 2025 a Russian travel magazine reported 10,000 som for a UAZ for six people, return, to the Karakol alpine camp.

Planning your exit day

The most common mistake is planning to come down on the same day as the pass crossing. Stage times are long, and weather can stop you. Leave a spare day if you can.

A realistic plan for the classic direction:

  1. Book the 16:00 seat from Altyn Arashan for day 3 or day 4, before you leave Karakol.
  2. Note the WhatsApp number on your booking. If you get signal on the pass, you can message about a change.
  3. On exit day, aim to reach the valley floor by early afternoon.
  4. Pay the national park fee if asked, soak in the springs, and be at the car by 16:00.

If you miss the car, there are guesthouses in the valley. You can stay the night and take a seat the next day, or walk down to Ak-Suu in 3–4 hours.

What to do with luggage

Most hikers leave big bags at their Karakol guesthouse and trek with only what they need. Since the car brings you back to central Karakol around 18:00, you can collect your bag the same evening.

Groups

For groups of four to eight, a whole car may be easier: a UAZ-469 for up to 4 is 25,000 som, a UAZ-452 for up to 8 is 31,000 som. You set the time. Private cars can be booked any time, including for today. See private transfer.

When to go

In May the lake itself is usually still frozen.
