Altyn Arashan day trip itinerary: five hours without a tour

You do not need a guided tour to see Altyn Arashan in a day. A seat in a shared 4x4 gets you there and back for under $50. Here is how to spend the five hours.

Updated

Altyn Arashan is the most popular day out from Karakol. It is a green alpine valley with hot springs, a river and a view of Palatka peak at the far end. Most packaged trips sell it as a tour with a guide, lunch and transport for $200 or more per car.

Times, price and booking for the seat itself are on the Altyn Arashan day trip from Karakol page. This guide is about how to use the five hours.

You do not need any of that. The valley is simple to explore alone. The only hard part is the road, and a seat in a shared 4x4 solves it.

The plan in one table

  1. Meet at Giraffe Coffee

    Zhusaeva St, central Karakol

  2. Depart

16 km of riverbed track with fords, 2–2.5 hours

  3. In the valley, about 5 hours

Hot springs, walks, lunch at a guesthouse. The driver waits.

  4. Back down
  5. Karakol

Why not a tour

A tour adds a guide and often a fixed lunch stop. In Altyn Arashan you do not need either:

What you do need is a vehicle that can handle the track, and a driver who will wait. That is what the seat gives you.

How to spend five hours

Five hours is enough for springs, a walk and lunch without rushing. A sensible split:

10:30–11:00: arrive and pay the fees

Pay the national park fee (about 300 som in cash). Ask your driver where the bath houses are; the springs are near the guesthouses on the valley floor.

11:00–13:30: walk up the valley

Walk south along the river towards Palatka peak (4,260 m). The valley opens into meadows, often with herders and horses in summer. Walk out for about an hour and a quarter, then turn around. You will see more than you would by sitting in the pools all day.

If you prefer a shorter walk, follow the river for 30–40 minutes and find a spot for a picnic. More walking ideas are on our valley walks page.

13:30–14:15: lunch

Eat at a guesthouse or bring your own food from Karakol. There is no shop worth relying on.

14:15–15:30: hot springs

Soak after the walk, not before. Your legs will thank you. The bath house costs about 250 som. Historically there have been two main sources: a radon spring at about 35 °C and a hydrogen sulphide spring at about 41 °C (too.kg). Keep sessions short at first, especially at altitude. 15–20 minutes, then a break, is a common rule.

15:30–16:00: dry off and meet the car

Be at the car on time. It leaves at 16:00.

What to bring

When to go

The track is busiest from June to September, which is also the best time for walking. Spring and autumn days can be cold and the track muddy. Check our road status page before booking out of season.

Day trip or overnight?

A day trip suits you if you have limited time, want to keep your Karakol base, or do not want to carry overnight gear.

An overnight suits you if you want:

For an overnight, book a one-way seat up (2,750 som) and another one down on the day you leave. Guesthouses in the valley serve dinner and breakfast.
