Hiring a jeep to Altyn Arashan: what drivers charge in 2026

Ask five people in Karakol what a jeep to Altyn Arashan costs and you will get five answers. Most travel blogs quote prices from 2015–2021. This guide gives current numbers and shows where they come from.

Why a jeep at all

The last 12–15 km from Ak-Suu village to the hot springs is a rough mountain track. Normal cars and city taxis cannot drive it. Local drivers use Soviet-built UAZ vehicles: the small UAZ-469 jeep and the larger UAZ-452 van, known as the "bukhanka" (loaf of bread). The climb takes about two hours.

So the question is not taxi versus jeep. It is how many people share the jeep.

Our prices

At the rate shown on our site (about 87.5 som per US dollar), the return seat is about $43 and the one-way seat about $31. The private cars are about $286 and $354. Card payments are charged in som, so the dollar figure on your statement depends on your bank's rate.

Licensed carriers do the driving. Arashan Transfer is the booking agent.

What others charge

These are real published prices, with dates, so you can compare:

• Forum report, May 2024: about $200 for a UAZ "bukhanka", return (eurasia.travel forum).
• Russian excursion platform: €200 for a day trip from Karakol for 1–6 people, and €470 for a 12-hour tour from Cholpon-Ata.
• Karakol Gorge, not Altyn Arashan, June 2025: 10,000 som for a UAZ for six people return to the Karakol alpine camp (T—Zh travel magazine). Different valley, shorter road, but a useful benchmark.
• Taxi to the Karakol Gorge trailhead: 1,500–2,000 som one way (central-asia.live).
• Multi-day tours: $435 and up for packaged 3–4 day trips including Altyn Arashan.

Old blogs mention prices such as 750 som. They are a decade out of date.

The maths: when does a whole car pay off?

A shared seat costs 3,750 som per person. A private UAZ-469 costs 25,000 som for up to four people.

• 1 person: seat 3,750 vs car 25,000. Take the seat.
• 2 people: 7,500 vs 25,000. Take seats.
• 4 people: 15,000 vs 25,000. Seats are cheaper; the car buys you your own timetable.
• 8 people: 30,000 in seats vs 31,000 for a UAZ-452. Almost the same. The private car gives flexibility.

A private car makes sense if you want a different time, a longer stay or a stop on the way. Otherwise shared seats are cheaper for any group size.

Extra costs nobody mentions

Budget for these in cash, in som:

• National park fee: about 300 som per person. Older blogs say 250 som; check on the day.
• Bath house: about 250 som. Historic prices ranged from 50 to 200 som; the current price depends on which bath house you use.
• Food: guesthouses in the valley serve meals. Bring snacks either way.

There is no ATM and no mobile signal in the valley. Take enough cash from Karakol.

Watch-outs when you hire a driver directly

You can find a driver yourself in Karakol. Many people do. A few things to agree in advance:

• Return or one way? Is the price for both directions, and how long will the driver wait?
• Per car or per person? A quoted price can mean either.
• What if the weather turns? Who decides to turn back, and what do you pay?
• Licensing. Ask whether the driver is licensed to carry passengers.

With a shared seat these are fixed: the car leaves at 08:00 from Giraffe Coffee, Zhusaeva St, stays about five hours, and leaves the valley at 16:00. It runs with 2 paid seats; if not, you get another date or a 100% refund. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

How prices compare per person

The headline price of a car hides the real question: what does each person pay? Using the published numbers above:

The market UAZ looks cheap per head only if you fill it. That means finding five other travellers who want the same day and time, and agreeing who pays what. A seat removes that step.

Seasonal and day-to-day changes

Independent drivers often charge more in peak summer, at weekends and when the weather is bad. Our seat prices stay the same every day. The only thing that changes is whether the car runs: it needs 2 paid seats. If a date does not fill, you get another date or a full refund.

• Future dates: book any time.
• Same day: shared seats until 07:45 Karakol time. Private cars can be booked any time, including for today.
• Pay online by card or by card or cash on the spot.
