Altyn Arashan by car or taxi: can you drive up?

Short answer: a taxi or an ordinary car gets you to Ak-Suu, not to the springs. The last stretch is a rough riverbed track for high-clearance 4x4s. Here is what that means if you have a car, a rental or a taxi in mind.

Many people reach Karakol with wheels: a car from Almaty over the Kegen crossing, a rental from Bishkek, or a taxi from the hostel. All of them are fine for the first part of the trip. None of them is the right vehicle for the second.

The quickest way up without your own 4x4 is a seat on our Altyn Arashan day trip from Karakol: 08:00 from Giraffe Coffee, 3,750 som return.

Two roads, not one

The trip to Altyn Arashan has two very different legs.

LegDistanceSurfaceWhat gets through
Karakol → Ak-Suu (Teploklyuchenka)about 10 km eastpavedany car, taxi, minibus
Ak-Suu → Altyn Arashanabout 12–17 km, about 680 m uprocks, ruts, river crossingshigh-clearance 4x4 (UAZ-469, UAZ-452) or your feet

Published lengths of the second leg differ because people start counting at different points; Dangerous Roads gives 16.7 km from Teploklyuchenka. By UAZ it takes about two hours. On foot it is 5–6 hours up and about four down.

By taxi

A taxi from Karakol to Ak-Suu is an easy, short ride. Agree the fare before you get in; we have no current confirmed figure to quote. From the village you walk, or you have already booked a seat in a 4x4.

What a taxi cannot do is drive the track. City cars sit too low for the rocks and the fords.

Taxi plus walk works if: you are staying the night in the valley, you start early, and you carry water and food. It does not leave much time at the springs on a day trip.

In your own car or a rental

From Almaty. The Kegen–Karkara crossing has run round the clock since 26 August 2025, and the paved road to Karakol is fine for any car. Check the documents you need first; e-visas are not accepted at this crossing. Details in our Kegen–Karkara border guide.

In Karakol. Drive to your guesthouse and stop there. Above Ak-Suu an ordinary car is the wrong tool: the underbody hits rocks, the clearance is not enough for the river crossings, and there is no phone signal to call for help.

A rental 4x4. A modern SUV may be physically able to make it in dry weather. Two things to check before you try:

Why everyone uses a UAZ

The UAZ-469 ("kozlik") and the UAZ-452 ("bukhanka") are old Soviet 4x4s. They are slow and loud, but they sit high, have low gearing and are easy to repair. The licensed local drivers run this track day after day. Longer read: is the road to Altyn Arashan dangerous?

Weather matters as much as the vehicle. Heavy rain, fast snowmelt and deep snow can close the track for a day or more. Check the road today before any trip up.

If you drive a 4x4 yourself anyway

Leave the car in Karakol

For most drivers the easy plan is to park the car where they sleep and ride up with someone who drives the track every day.

  1. Leave the car at your guesthouse in Karakol. Ask the owner where to park.
  2. Walk to Giraffe Coffee, Zhusaeva Street, central Karakol, for 07:50.
  3. The 4x4 leaves at 08:00 and is in the valley around 10:30.
  4. About five hours for the springs, a walk and lunch.
  5. Back down at 16:00, in Karakol around 18:00. Your car is where you left it.

Seats for today can be booked until 07:45 Karakol time, future dates any time. The departure runs from 2 paid seats; otherwise you choose another date or get a full refund.

Groups with their own car

Four to eight people who drove in together usually want their own schedule as well. A whole UAZ fits that: a UAZ-469 for up to 4 people is 25,000 som, a UAZ-452 for up to 8 is 31,000 som, and it can be booked any time, including for today. See private UAZ to Altyn Arashan.

Summary

A car or a taxi gets you to Ak-Suu. From there you need a high-clearance 4x4 and a driver who knows the track, or a long walk. Most people who arrive by car leave it in Karakol and take the 08:00 seat.

Questions

Can a taxi take me to Altyn Arashan?

Not all the way. Taxis from Karakol go as far as the village of Ak-Suu, about 10 km east of town. Above the village the track needs a high-clearance 4x4 such as a UAZ.

Can I drive my own car or a rental car to Altyn Arashan?

Only in a real high-clearance 4x4, with experience on rough tracks and river crossings. Ordinary cars and most crossovers turn back. Read your rental agreement: many exclude off-road driving.

Where do I leave my car if I take the shared 4x4?

In Karakol, at your guesthouse or hotel. Walk to Giraffe Coffee on Zhusaeva Street for 07:50. The car is back in Karakol around 18:00.

How much is a jeep from Karakol?

A seat in our shared 4x4 is 3,750 som return or 2,750 som one way. A whole UAZ is 25,000 som (up to 4 people) or 31,000 som (up to 8).
