Kegen–Karkara Border Crossing to Karakol (2026 Update)
Most guides still say this crossing is seasonal and open 8:00–18:00. That changed in 2025. Here is what is confirmed, what is not, and how to plan Almaty to Karakol through it.
Updated
The Kegen–Karkara crossing (Karkyra on the Kyrgyz side) is the shortest road between Almaty and Karakol. For years it was a summer-only crossing with daytime hours, and nearly every English-language guide still says so. In 2025 that changed.
This page sets out what is confirmed, what is not, and how to use the crossing to reach Karakol and Altyn Arashan.
What changed in 2025
24-hour operation. Kazakhstan announced that the Kegen checkpoint would work around the clock from 26 August 2025. On 11 September 2025 a Kyrgyz logistics outlet reported that the Karkyra road checkpoint had moved to a 24-hour schedule. It is a multilateral crossing for both cargo and passengers.
Direct bus. A direct bus between Karakol and Almaty through this crossing launched on 7 September 2025. Kyrgyz media reported a distance of about 370 km and a fare of 1,200 som, and the route was described as year-round.
What guides still say. Older guides describe the crossing as open from about mid-May to the end of October, 8:00 to 18:00. Treat that as out of date for hours, but keep it in mind for winter.
What is still not confirmed
- Winter in practice. The crossing is now 24-hour and the bus was announced as year-round, but we have not seen reliable reports of winter crossings yet. Heavy snow on the plateau can affect the road whatever the checkpoint hours.
- Bus timetable. A reader comment on a travel blog mentions a daily bus leaving Karakol around 10:00 and arriving in Almaty around 18:00. That is unverified. Ask at the bus station in Almaty or Karakol.
- Money exchange. There is no exchange at the border. Get tenge or som in town.
Visas and documents
- E-visas. Travellers report that e-visas are not accepted at this crossing, and people with e-visas have been sent back to cross at Ak-Jol near Bishkek. If your nationality needs an e-visa for Kyrgyzstan or Kazakhstan, use a main crossing.
- Visa-free travellers. Many nationalities can enter both countries visa-free. Check your own rules before travelling.
- Kazakh citizens. Check the current document requirements for entering Kyrgyzstan with your passport or ID card before you leave.
Distances and times
| Leg | Approximate time |
|---|---|
| Almaty → Kegen | about 4 h |
| Kegen → border | about 40 min |
| Border → Karakol | about 2 h |
| Total including the crossing | about 7 h, plus 60–90 min buffer |
These times come from a family that drove the route privately. The bus may be slower.
Ways to cross
- Direct bus, Almaty ↔ Karakol. The cheapest option at 1,200 som. Confirm departure time locally.
- Private driver or taxi. The most flexible. Agree on who pays which side and whether the driver can cross.
- Shared rides. Ask at your hostel or around the Karakol animal market area for drivers going to Almaty.
- Via Bishkek. The old long way: public transport via Bishkek and the Kordai crossing, about 11 hours. Use this if you need an e-visa crossing.
From the border to Altyn Arashan
The crossing makes a weekend trip from Almaty to Altyn Arashan realistic without a car:

Tips for the crossing
- Carry water and snacks: shops on the plateau are few and far between.
- Exchange money in Almaty or Karakol beforehand.
- Leave buffer time. Queues vary, and weather on the high plateau can slow the road.
- Keep a screenshot of your bookings. Mobile data can be patchy near the border.
- Remember there is no mobile signal or ATM in Altyn Arashan itself. Bring cash in som for the park fee (about 300 som) and the pools (about 250 som).
Why this matters for Karakol
Before 2025, travellers coming from Almaty in winter or after dark had to go the long way via Bishkek. A 24-hour crossing and a direct bus change that. Karakol is a ski town in winter and a trekking base in summer, and Almaty is the nearest big city. With the shorter road, a long weekend in Karakol from Almaty becomes realistic, including a day at the Altyn Arashan hot springs.
Expect this to keep changing. Bus operators, schedules and border rules in the region often shift from season to season. We update this page when we see confirmed changes.
