Almaty to Karakol in 2026: bus, car or flight, then Altyn Arashan

Since September 2025 a direct bus links Almaty and Karakol through the Kegen–Karkara crossing. Most English guides still describe the old route. Here is the current one.

Updated

For years the only bus between Almaty and Karakol went the long way, through Bishkek and the Korday crossing. In 2025 that changed. A direct route now runs over the Kegen–Karkara pass, and the border post on it has gone round the clock. Most English-language guides have not caught up.

The quick plan with a booking ticket is on Almaty to Altyn Arashan without a car.

This guide covers the full trip: Almaty to Karakol, then Karakol to the Altyn Arashan hot springs.

What changed in 2025

Leg 1: Almaty to Karakol

By direct bus

The bus is the cheapest option. We could not confirm the current departure time or Almaty departure station from an official source, so we do not print one. A traveller comment from autumn 2025 mentions a daily bus from Karakol at 10:00 arriving around 18:00, which is unverified. Ask at the bus station a day or two before you travel, and check the fare: 1,200 som was the launch price.

By car or taxi

A traveller who drove the route reported roughly: Almaty to Kegen about 4 hours, Kegen to the border about 40 minutes, the border to Karakol about 2 hours. Add time for the crossing. Shared rides and private taxis are arranged through hostels and online listings.

By air

Asman Airlines announced direct Almaty–Karakol flights from December 2025, twice a week on Fridays and Sundays, from 6,500 som. We have not confirmed that the route is still operating; check with the airline.

Border tips

A night in Karakol

The bus ride takes most of a day. The shared 4x4 to Altyn Arashan leaves at 08:00. So plan at least one night in Karakol. The town has dozens of hostels and guesthouses. Get som from an ATM in town: there is none in the valley.

Leg 2: Karakol to Altyn Arashan

Altyn Arashan is a valley with hot springs about 25 km from Karakol. The last 12–15 km above Ak-Suu village is a 4x4 track that takes about two hours. Walking it takes 5–6 hours.

The shared 4x4 runs daily:

  1. Meet at Giraffe Coffee

    Zhusaeva St, central Karakol

  2. Depart

16 km of riverbed track with fords, 2–2.5 hours

  3. In the valley, about 5 hours

Hot springs, walks, lunch at a guesthouse. The driver waits.

  4. Back down
  5. Karakol

Return seat: 3,750 som. One-way seat: 2,750 som, if you want to stay overnight in the valley. Licensed carriers do the driving; Arashan Transfer is the booking agent.

You can book from Almaty before you leave. Future dates can be booked any time, and you can pay by card online or by card or cash on the spot.

Common questions from Kazakhstan

Do I need to change money? Yes. Kyrgyzstan uses the som. There is no exchange at the border, so bring som or withdraw in Karakol.

Will my Kazakh SIM work? Roaming may work in Karakol. There is no mobile signal in Altyn Arashan at all.

Can I drive my own car up to the springs? Only a high-clearance 4x4 with an experienced driver. Most visitors leave their car in Karakol and take a seat or a private UAZ.

Is the trip worth it for one night? It is tight but doable. Bus on day one, valley on day two, bus back on day three.
