Best day trips from Karakol, with real transport costs
Karakol is a base for valleys, springs and canyons. Most lists skip the hard part: how to get there and what it costs. This one leads with it.
Updated
Karakol sits at the east end of Issyk-Kul, at the foot of the Tian Shan. Within an hour or two you can reach alpine valleys, red rock canyons and hot springs. Here are the day trips worth your time, ranked, with how to get there and what it costs.
Prices are from published sources with dates where we have them. Local transport prices move, so treat them as a guide.
1. Altyn Arashan: alpine valley and hot springs
Why go: a green valley at around 2,500 m with hot mineral springs, a river and a view of Palatka peak (4,260 m). It feels remote but you can be back for dinner.
Getting there: the last 12–15 km above Ak-Suu village is a rough 4x4 track. Normal cars cannot drive it. You either walk 5–6 hours each way or ride a 4x4 for about two hours.
Cost:
- Shared 4x4 seat, return: 3,750 som. Meet 07:50, leave 08:00 from Giraffe Coffee, Zhusaeva St. In the valley around 10:30, back down at 16:00, in Karakol around 18:00.
- Private UAZ: 25,000 som for up to 4 people, 31,000 som for up to 8.
- Park fee about 300 som, bath house about 250 som.
Licensed carriers do the driving; Arashan Transfer is the booking agent.
Time needed: a full day.

2. Jeti-Oguz: red rocks and a wide valley
Why go: the "Seven Bulls" red sandstone cliffs, a Soviet-era resort and an easy valley to walk into. Good for a half day.
Getting there: just over 30 km from Karakol. Marshrutka 371 leaves from the south-west corner of the main bazaar, at Torgoeva and Aldasheva streets. It is scheduled for 10:00 but often leaves later. A taxi is the easier option.
Cost: nomadicbackpacker.com quotes the standard taxi rate at 700 som, one way or return, plus 100 som per hour of waiting. Tourists picking up a taxi at the bazaar may be asked for more. A January 2025 guide quotes a shared taxi at about 200 som per person one way. These prices are not recently confirmed.
Time needed: half a day to a full day.
3. Ak-Suu (Kench) hot springs: easy soak near town
Why go: if you want hot water without a mountain road. The resort is in Ak-Suu village, at the bottom of the Altyn Arashan track.
Getting there: marshrutka 350 towards Ak-Suu; ask the driver for the resort or the hot springs.
Cost: a January 2025 guide lists 250 som for about an hour in three pools of different temperatures.
Time needed: two to three hours. Combine it with the market or a museum in town.
4. Karakol Gorge: forest walk inside the national park
Why go: spruce forest, a river and the start of the Ala-Kul trek. You can walk in as far as you like and turn back.
Getting there: marshrutka 101 to the park entrance, or a taxi. A taxi to the trailhead deeper in the gorge is listed at 1,500–2,000 som one way.
Cost: park entry about 250–300 som depending on the source and year.
Time needed: half a day to a full day. Ala-Kul lake itself needs two days or more; see how to get to Ala-Kul.
5. Skazka (Fairy Tale) canyon: eroded red rock on the lake shore
Why go: colourful clay formations near the south shore of Issyk-Kul. Great for photos, especially late afternoon.
Getting there: marshrutka 310 or 315 from Karakol's southern bus station towards Bokonbaevo. Get off at the Skazka sign and walk about 30 minutes. Do not leave the return too late; transport thins out in the evening.
Time needed: half a day, more with a swim in the lake.
6. Sunday animal market
Why go: one of the best livestock markets in Central Asia. Horses, sheep, cattle and a lot of bargaining.
Getting there: marshrutka 101 (10 som in early 2025) or a short taxi. About 40 minutes on foot from the centre.
When: Sundays only, early. It winds down around 10:00. Go at 07:00 and you can still catch the 08:00 departure to Altyn Arashan on another day.

- Weather. Mountain valleys are cooler than town. Bring a warm layer.
- Signal. Coverage drops off in the valleys, and there is none in Altyn Arashan.
- Booking. Shared 4x4 seats for future dates can be booked any time; same-day seats close at 07:45 Karakol time. The car runs with 2 paid seats; if not, another date or a 100% refund.
