Altyn Arashan guesthouses, yurts and camping

A handful of guesthouses and yurt camps sit next to the hot springs at about 2,500–2,600 m. Here is what is there, what it roughly costs, and when sleeping in the valley is worth it.

Updated

Altyn Arashan is not a village. It is a high meadow on the Arashan River with a few guesthouses, yurt camps and wooden bathhouses built over the thermal springs. Everything sits within walking distance of everything else. What you choose mostly decides how warm you sleep and whether someone cooks for you.

Getting up and down for an overnight is covered on staying overnight in Altyn Arashan: a one-way 4x4 seat up at 08:00 and another down at 16:00.

This guide covers the places that show up in current listings, what their published prices look like, and how to decide between a night up there and a day trip.

What is in the valley

The springs lie at roughly 2,500–2,600 m. Published figures vary from 2,350 m to 2,700 m, depending on which pool and which source you read. The area has been a protected reserve since 1963, so building is limited. That is why you will not find a hotel strip, just a cluster of family-run places.

Guesthouse Elza

The best-documented option. Its listing on nomadsland describes double, triple, quadruple and six-bed rooms, two dining rooms serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, and its own pool fed by a warm natural spring. Published prices are inconsistent between listings: one version shows 6,000 som for a single and 7,000 som for a double, another shows dollar prices. A Russian-language travel diary on T—Zh reported about 4,000 som per night including lunch and dinner. Treat all of these as a range, not a quote, and confirm directly before you go.

Ala-Kol Guesthouse and yurts

Less than 1 km from the main springs. A nomadsland listing shows a double room at 6,500 som, a triple at 7,500 som, and beds in a shared room or shared yurt at 2,500 som. It does not say whether that includes meals. A 2019 visitor in late October found it open, with a wood stove, dinner on request and tents pitched beside the house.

Arashan Hotel

Listed on Trip.com, Expedia and Hotels.com under Teploklyuchenka / Ak-Suu. Online booking is the main advantage here: you can confirm a room before you lose signal.

Yurt camps and camping

Several camps put up yurts for the summer season, and there are informal camping spots near the hot springs. Trekkers coming down from Ala-Kul often camp here for a night. If you camp, bring a sleeping bag rated for near-freezing temperatures. Average night lows in July are around 12 °C and drop fast in September.

Overnight or day trip?

A day trip and an overnight stay are different experiences. Pick the one that fits your plan.

Choose the day trip if:

The return day trip costs 3,750 som for a seat. You leave Giraffe Coffee at 08:00, reach the valley around 10:30, have about five hours there, and the jeep heads back at 16:00. You are in Karakol around 18:00. That is enough for two soaks and a walk towards the head of the valley.

Choose a night in the valley if:

For a night, book two one-way seats: up on one day, back on the 16:00 jeep another day. Each one-way seat is 2,750 som. Seats on the shared jeep can be booked any time for future dates, and for the same day until 07:45 Karakol time.

Staying after the Ala-Kul trek

Most people walk the Ala-Kul loop from the Karakol Gorge side and finish in Altyn Arashan. After two or three days on the trail, a night in a guesthouse with a hot pool is the best part of the trip for many hikers. The next afternoon you can skip the long walk down to Ak-Suu and take a one-way seat on the 16:00 jeep. Details are on the Ala-Kul page and in our 3-day Ala-Kul itinerary.

Questions

Do I need to book a guesthouse in Altyn Arashan in advance?

In July and August it is wise, because the valley has only a few places to stay and there is no mobile signal to arrange things on arrival. Outside peak season you can usually find a bed or a spot for a tent.

Can I camp in Altyn Arashan?

Yes. There are several camping spots near the hot springs, and some guesthouses let you pitch a tent beside them. Bring a warm sleeping bag: nights are cold even in summer.

Is there an ATM or card payment in the valley?

No. There is no ATM and no mobile signal, so bring enough cash in som for your room, meals, the national park fee and the hot-spring pools.

How do I get up to my guesthouse?

Take a one-way seat in the daily 4x4 from Karakol for 2,750 som. It leaves Giraffe Coffee at 08:00 and reaches the valley around 10:30. Coming back, a one-way seat on the 16:00 return costs the same.

2 750 som per seat, one way. Daily at 08:00 from Giraffe Coffee, Karakol.
