Altyn Arashan Packing List and Costs for a Day
There is no ATM, no shop worth relying on and no mobile signal in the valley. Here is exactly what to pack and how much cash to bring for a day at the hot springs.
Updated
Altyn Arashan is easy to reach with a 4x4, but once you are there you are on your own. There is no ATM and no mobile signal, and the few guesthouses are not shops. If you forget something in Karakol, you go without it.
This is a practical list for a day trip, followed by a cost breakdown.
The essentials
- Cash in som, in small notes. Park fee, pools and lunch are all cash. No ATM in the valley.
- Swimwear. The whole point of the trip.
- Quick-dry towel. Some pools rent towels, many do not.
- Warm layer. The valley is at about 2,500–2,600 m. Even on a hot day in Karakol it is cooler up there, and the temperature drops the moment the sun goes behind the ridge.
- Rain jacket. Summer afternoons often bring showers.
- Water. At least a litre from town, plus a way to treat more.
- Passport or a copy. Keep ID with you while travelling in Kyrgyzstan.
- Sun protection. Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen. UV is strong at altitude.
Clothes
| Item | Summer | Spring / autumn | Winter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base layer | T-shirt | long-sleeve | thermal |
| Mid layer | fleece | fleece + light down | heavy down |
| Outer | rain jacket | waterproof jacket | ski jacket |
| Legs | hiking trousers or shorts | trousers | insulated trousers |
| Feet | trainers with grip | boots | insulated boots |
| Extras | sun hat | hat, light gloves | hat, gloves, neck warmer |
For winter trips see Altyn Arashan in winter.
For the hot springs
- swimwear (wear it under your clothes to save time);
- towel;
- flip-flops or sandals for wet floors;
- a plastic or dry bag for wet things on the ride back;
- a hair tie and a small comb.
Pools are fed by water at about 35 °C and 41 °C. Soak in short sessions, drink water between them, and get out if you feel dizzy. Talk to a doctor first if you are pregnant or have heart or blood pressure problems. More about the pools in our hot springs guide.
Food and water
- Snacks and lunch. Some guesthouses serve meals to day visitors, but it is not guaranteed. Pack a lunch to be safe: bread, cheese, fruit, nuts.
- Drinking water. Bring at least a litre from Karakol.
- Water treatment. Do not drink from the river or streams untreated. Use a filter, tablets, or boil it.
- Thermos. Something hot is welcome in spring, autumn and winter.
Take your rubbish back down with you. There is no collection service in the valley.
Small but useful
- phone with offline maps downloaded (there is no signal, but GPS works);
- power bank;
- small first-aid kit with blister plasters and painkillers;
- motion-sickness tablets if you get carsick (the road is bumpy for about two hours);
- toilet paper and hand sanitiser;
- a light daypack to carry it all.
What a day costs
| Item | Cost | Paid |
|---|---|---|
| Shared 4x4 seat, return | 3,750 som | online by card or on the spot |
| National park fee | about 300 som | cash at the entrance |
| Hot-spring pool | about 250 som per session | cash |
| Lunch | varies | cash |
| Total, typical day | about 4,300 som + food |
The park fee and pool price change from season to season, and different pools charge differently. Bring a little more than you think you need.
Paying for the seat. You can pay online by card through Stripe — the charge is in som, exactly the listed price — or by card or cash on the spot.

Last check before you leave the hostel
- cash in som, in small notes
- swimwear and towel
- warm layer and rain jacket
- water and lunch
- passport
- sunscreen and sunglasses
- booking confirmation (screenshot it; you will not have signal later)
Common mistakes
- Only bringing cards. The most common problem. Withdraw cash in Karakol the day before.
- Big notes only. Change can be scarce in the valley. Break large notes in town.
- Dressing for town. A T-shirt is not enough at 2,500 m once clouds roll in.
- No towel. Do not assume one will be provided.
- Forgetting to screenshot the booking. There is no signal in the valley to look it up.
- Drinking from the river. It looks clean. Treat it anyway.
Packing for kids
If you travel with children, add spare clothes, more snacks than you think, a favourite small toy for the two-hour drive, and a small towel for each child. The hot pools are too hot for long sessions for small children, so keep their soaks short.

Questions
How much cash should I bring to Altyn Arashan?
For a day trip, plan on about 300 som for the national park fee, about 250 som per pool session and money for lunch. 1,500–2,000 som in small notes covers most people comfortably.
Can I pay by card in Altyn Arashan?
Do not count on it. There is no ATM and no mobile signal, so card terminals usually do not work. Bring cash in som.
Can I drink the river water?
Not untreated. Boil it, filter it or use purification tablets. Bring at least a litre of drinking water from town.
Do I need hiking boots?
For a day at the springs and a short walk, trainers with good grip are fine in summer. For longer walks, wet weather or snow, wear boots.
3 750 som per seat, round trip. Daily at 08:00 from Giraffe Coffee, Karakol.
