Jeti-Oguz Day Trip from Karakol
Red cliffs, a legend about seven bulls and a green valley behind them, about 30 km from Karakol. Here is how to get there today, and our plans for a shared 4x4 route.
Updated
Jeti-Oguz is the second big day trip from Karakol after Altyn Arashan. The name means "Seven Bulls", after a wall of red sandstone cliffs at the mouth of the gorge. Behind them a green valley runs up towards the mountains, with yurts in summer and good walking.
We do not run a Jeti-Oguz shuttle yet. This guide explains how to get there on your own today, what to see, and how to get on the list for our planned shared 4x4.
What you will see
The Seven Bulls. A line of steep red conglomerate cliffs, eroded into separate bluffs. Count for yourself: some say seven, others eight or ten. The formation has been a protected natural monument since 1975. Local legend ties it to a khan, an unfaithful wife and seven bulls sacrificed for a funeral feast.
The Broken Heart. A large red rock split down the middle, which you pass on the way into the gorge. Morning light is best for photos.
The viewpoint. A short, steep path between the shops near the public toilets climbs above the Seven Bulls. One travel writer took about 25 minutes at a slow pace. The view takes in the rocks, the sanatorium and the valley mouth.
The valley. Beyond the rocks the gorge opens into wide meadows, sometimes called the Valley of Flowers. In summer there are yurt camps. You can walk for an hour or a whole day.
The sanatorium. An old Soviet-era resort at the foot of the rocks offers thermal baths. They are less of a draw than the springs at Altyn Arashan or Ak-Suu. See our hot springs comparison.
How to get there today
Jeti-Oguz is about 30 km from Karakol, roughly half an hour's drive on a road in good condition. From the main lake road it is about 5 km to Jeti-Oguz village and 12 km to the rock formations.

- Route 355 runs later, around midday, depending on the driver.

These details come from an undated guide. Check with your hostel before relying on them.

- About 700 som through a guesthouse has been quoted, one way or return, with waiting at about 100 som per hour.

Our planned Jeti-Oguz 4x4 shuttle
We are preparing a shared 4x4 route to Jeti-Oguz, built like our Altyn Arashan shuttle: a fixed morning departure from central Karakol, a seat price instead of a whole car, free time in the valley and a fixed return. We are not selling it yet, and we will not announce a price until the route is confirmed with our partner carriers.
To be first to hear about dates, send us a message on WhatsApp with "Jeti-Oguz" and your travel dates.
Meanwhile: Altyn Arashan runs every day
If you have one mountain day in Karakol, Altyn Arashan is the one we would pick: an alpine valley at about 2,500–2,600 m, hot pools at 35–41 °C, and Palatka peak above. The shared 4x4 runs daily. Meet at Giraffe Coffee on Zhusaeva Street at 07:50, leave at 08:00, arrive around 10:30, about five hours in the valley, head back at 16:00, in Karakol around 18:00. A seat costs 3,750 som return.

Practical tips
- Cash. Bring som in small notes for the minibus, food and any entry fees.
- Weather. The valley is lower than Altyn Arashan and warmer, but afternoon storms still happen in summer.
- Shoes. The viewpoint path is steep and loose. Wear proper shoes, not sandals.
- Combine it. Jeti-Oguz is on the south shore road, so it works on the way to or from Karakol if you are travelling around Issyk-Kul.
Jeti-Oguz or Altyn Arashan?
They are different days. Jeti-Oguz is easier to reach, lower and greener, and the famous rocks are right next to the road, so you can see the highlights in a couple of hours. Altyn Arashan is a proper mountain valley at about 2,500–2,600 m, reached only by a rough 4x4 track, with hot pools you can actually soak in. If you have two free days, do both. If you have one, choose by what you want: photographs and an easy walk at Jeti-Oguz, or mountains and hot water at Altyn Arashan.
