Altyn Arashan Weather and the Best Time to Visit

July and August are warmest, September is the quiet sweet spot, and winter is for hot pools in the snow. Here is what each month in the valley is really like.

Updated

Altyn Arashan sits at about 2,500–2,600 m, more than 800 m above Karakol. That height changes everything. A warm day in town can be a jacket day in the valley, and snow lingers in the high meadows long after the lake shore is green.

Whatever the month, the Altyn Arashan day trip from Karakol leaves at 08:00 when the road is open; check the road today before you book.

Below is a month-by-month guide, built from long-term climate averages and trekking season data.

Averages hide real swings. A sunny July afternoon can feel hotter, and a cold front can bring snow to the valley in any month outside high summer.

Month by month

December to February: winter

Snow on the ground, clear skies, cold nights. This is the season for sitting in 35–41 °C water with snow all around. Karakol is busy with skiers, and the valley is nearly empty. The road is harder and can close after snowfall or on ice, so plan with a spare day. Our winter guide covers what to wear and how bookings work in the cold season.

March and April: thaw

Snow lasts in the valley through much of March. In April the thaw turns sections of the road to mud, and conditions change week to week. A trip to the springs is possible on good days. Hiking higher is not.

May: green below, white above

The lower valley turns green and the river runs high with snowmelt. Higher up there is still snow. Ala-Kul lake is usually frozen in May: a traveller asking on a forum in 2024 was told the lake would still be under ice in mid-May. A good month for the springs and short walks, not for the big trek.

June: fresh and wet

June is one of the wettest months, usually in the form of afternoon showers. Wildflowers come out. The Ala-Kul trek is sometimes possible late in June, but expect snow on the pass at 3,860 m and check conditions locally.

July and August: peak season

The warmest and most reliable months, and the core of the Ala-Kul trek season. Trekkers pour down from the pass into Altyn Arashan, guesthouses are busy and yurt camps are up. Mornings are usually clearer than afternoons, when clouds build and storms can roll in. Start early, carry a rain layer. If you plan to stay overnight, book a bed ahead.

September: the sweet spot

Cooler, calmer and drier than summer. Larch and birch turn yellow, crowds thin out and the Ala-Kul trek is still in season. Nights get cold, around 8 °C on average and often below that. For walking and photographs, many people's favourite month.

October and November: shoulder into winter

Days are short and cold, the first snow arrives, and many summer camps close. The springs are still warm. A traveller who walked up in late October 2019 hiked through snow, found a guesthouse open with a wood stove, and soaked for hours. Good for a quiet trip if you are ready for cold.

Packing by season

Full list in our packing guide.

Day-trip vs overnight by season

In summer, a day trip gives you about five hours in the valley, enough for a soak and a walk. If you want sunset or early-morning pools, stay a night. In winter, the short days and cold make a day trip the simpler choice for most people. In the shoulder seasons check which guesthouses are open before planning a night. For overnight trips, book two one-way seats at 2,750 som each instead of the return seat. See where to stay.
