Hiking Altyn Arashan without a guide

Thousands of people walk to Altyn Arashan on their own every summer. It is not technical, but it is long, high and out of signal. Here is what to know before you set off.

Updated

Altyn Arashan is one of the easiest overnight hikes near Karakol to do without a guide. There is one route, it follows a river, and you end at guesthouses and hot springs. That does not make it trivial. You climb roughly a kilometre, there is no mobile signal, and the weather turns quickly.

Want to walk only one way? A one-way 4x4 seat for 2,750 som takes you up at 08:00 or down at 16:00.

The route

Start: Ak-Suu village (also called Teploklyuchenka), about 10 km east of Karakol. City marshrutkas run there; ask your guesthouse which route number serves Ak-Suu this season.

End: the hot springs and guesthouses in Altyn Arashan valley, at around 2,500–2,600 m.

Distance: about 12–15 km one way, depending on where you start in the village.

Time: 5–6 hours up for most people with a day pack. Coming down is faster.

Navigation: you follow the 4x4 track up the Arashan river valley. There is no real way to get lost on the main route. Download an offline map anyway.

What the track is like

It is a rough dirt road built for UAZ jeeps, not a footpath. Expect:

Dangerousroads.org describes the drive as "not a piece of cake". On foot it is simply long and uphill.

Safety, honestly

No signal

There is no reliable mobile coverage in the valley or on most of the track. Before you start:

Bears

Bears are reported in the Altyn Arashan area. Encounters are rare on a busy track in daylight. If you camp, keep food away from your tent and pack out all rubbish.

Water

Do not drink untreated river or stream water. Livestock graze along the valley. Carry two litres and a filter or purification tablets.

Weather

The valley is much colder than Karakol. Afternoon storms are common in summer. Carry a warm layer, a rain jacket and a hat even in July. Start early so you are up before the afternoon weather.

Altitude

You climb roughly 1,000 m. Most healthy people are fine, but go at a steady pace, drink, and do not plan the hot springs straight after the climb if you feel unwell.

Dogs

Guesthouse and shepherd dogs are common in Kyrgyz valleys. Keep your distance from flocks.

Fees and money

There is no ATM. Bring cash from Karakol.

Walk one way, ride the other

The most popular plan for independent hikers is to walk one direction and ride the other. Walking up is the harder half; walking down is easier on the lungs but hard on the knees.

A seat in a shared 4x4 costs 2,750 som one way:

You can ride up, stay a night, and walk down the next morning. Or walk up, soak, and ride down at 16:00. Licensed carriers do the driving; Arashan Transfer is the booking agent. Book before you leave Karakol: you will have no signal in the valley.

Day hike or overnight?

Up and down in one day on foot is possible for fit hikers: about 25–30 km in total. You will have little time in the valley. Start at first light.

Overnight is the better plan. Stay in a guesthouse or camp, use the springs in the evening, and walk further up the valley towards Palatka peak (4,260 m) the next morning.

Ride up, hike in the valley, ride down is the easiest way to see the most in one day. The return seat is 3,750 som and gives you about five hours to walk in the upper valley. See our day trip plan.

Continuing to Ala-Kul

From Altyn Arashan, a trail climbs to the Ala-Kul pass (about 3,860 m) and the lake. This is a much bigger undertaking than the walk to the springs: high, steep, and snowbound outside July–September. If you go on alone, register your plan with someone and carry proper gear. See Ala-Kul trek transfer.

Timing your day

A practical timeline for walking up:

TimeStep
07:00Marshrutka or taxi from Karakol to Ak-Suu
08:00Start walking from the village
11:00Halfway; rest and eat
13:30–14:00Reach the valley
AfternoonCheck in, soak in the springs

If you are walking down instead, leave the valley in the morning. It takes less time than going up, but rocks are hard on the knees. Poles help.
